A Quick Y2K Fix (you can do right now)

As the millenium approaches
us I think most of us are at least 'somewhat' concearned. Personally,
I have woken out of a dead sleep several times over the last
few weeks thinking "Geez, will the internet be here come
January 1st?"
Most people agree, there is
little to worry about, even so, what can *you* do about it anyway?
While for the most part, most
of us can't do or change a whole lot of Y2K issues ourselves,
but here's one little tip that may save you some grief come the
year 2000. (MAC users may apply a similar method)
You may think your PC is Y2K
compliant and a number of tests may have actually affirmed that
your hardware is compliant, and you may even have a neat little
sticker affixed to your system saying Y2K compliant. However,
you may be surprised that Windows *may* still crash unless you
complete this simple exercise below.
Microsoft seems to have missed
a little problem when they certified their software was Y2K compliant.
This is simple to do, and very important.
1) Click on 'START'
2) Click on 'SETTINGS'
3) Then click on "CONTROL
PANEL'
Double click on "REGIONAL
SETTINGS" icon (look for that little world globe icon)
4) Click on the 'DATE' tab
at the top of the screen. (last tab on the top right)
Where it says, "SHORT
DATE SAMPLE", look and see if it shows a 'TWO DIGIT"
year format. mm/dd/yy
Unless you've previously changed
it (and you probably haven't) -- it will be set incorrectly.
It needs to be set with 4 y's for the year.
Microsoft made the 2 digits setting the default setting for all
windows 95/98/NT operating systems. This date format is the
date that Windows feeds "ALL APPLICATIONS SOFTWARE AND WILL
NOT ROLLOVER INTO THE YEAR 2000. IF LEFT AT IT'S DEFAULT SETTING,
IT WILL ROLL OVER TO THE YEAR 00
5) Click on the button across from "Short Date Style"
and select the option that shows mm/dd/yyyy. or m/d/yyyy. Be
sure your selection has 4 y's showing, not just 2.
Click "APPLY" on
the lower right hand corner then click the "OK" button.
That's It! You just might have saved yourself some serious problems
on new years day.

7 COOL WINDOWS SHORT CUTS (I'll cover MAC tips next month...)

Cool tip #1 (for Win98+IE5 users):
press Winkey + D .. then do it again and you'll see what happens.
Cool tip #2
You can use the keyboard shortcuts of CTRL-C to copy, CTRL-V
to paste
and CTRL-X to cut, across programs that don't even have the option
in
their menus. If you make a mistake, you can also use CTRL-Z to
undo
your last command.
Note: Ctrl-z is important to
remember because it will even restore
highlighted text that is deleted by pressing the del key.
Cool tip #3
Use CTRL+C to copy any file to the clipboard. Use CTRL+X to cut
it to
the clipboard. Then open the folder you want to place it in and
press
CTRL+V to paste. This is an easy way to move files around!
Cool tip #4
To completely shut down a window press Alt + F4. (watch out for
this
one because some bozo in a chat room might recommend you do this...
then laugh when your chat program closes and you are gone)
Cool tip #5
To select all files in a folder press Ctrl+A
Cool tip #6
Hold down ALT and press TAB to toggle forward between open applications.
ALT+SHIFT+TAB will toggle backwards. (I use this one a LOT but
didn't
know you could go backwards.)

Win key + E is a shortcut to open My Computer

If your thinking of buying MS Office 2000 for the first time,
